LOOP is an electric bus concept that aligns with EU ecodesign initiatives (ESPR) and designs out factors that inhibit product circularity.

 

A circular product is built on a closed-loop vision where resources are used efficiently and materials are recycled into the production chain.

The concept focuses on three objectives:

  • Design Out Plastic

  • Reduce Complexity

  • Modular Platform

The Challenge

The global plastic production keeps growing rapidly. However the recyclability of polymers is a polemic issue and is limited compared to metals or glass. Recycled plastics undergo quality degradation, finally leading to disposal or incineration. The reduction of plastic content in products holds global significance and poses a great challenge to product design.

Design Out Plastics

LOOP rules out composite plastic in favor of infinitely recyclable aluminium, glass and formaldehyde free plywood. This material selection determines the design language. Laser cutting, folding and bending dominate body manufacture.

Reduce Complexity

The symmetrical layout significantly reduces the number of components. Body panels are interchangeable, easy to manufacture and replace, extending the product's lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.

Seats are integrated into the wall paneling to reduce the number of components and save weight.

Modular Architecture

Loop is built of modules to facilitate manufacturing and the configuration of different models. The battery packs are integrated in a fully flat floor to achieve an even weight distribution. Ultra compact suspension modules integrate the motors and the steering.
